Google’s Local Guides program has over 120 million members across 24,000 locations globally.

This article states that though the guides that are a part of Google’s Local Guides program are “largely invisible”, they are an “indispensable part of the Google Maps experience”, as they provide reviews, images, and answer queries about local places. The author opines that since Google has failed to build social networks or products over the years, it is now layering social features into established products.

The Guides would now be more visible, as Maps’ users would be able to follow Local Guides and get local recommendations of places and activities. “Top Local Guides” will be determined using points and levels based on “contribution activity”.

These will be displayed under the “For You” tab in the Google Maps app. Users will see Local Guide’s recommendations upon following.
