Google’s Local Guides program has over 120 million members across 24,000 locations globally.

This article states that though the guides that are a part of Google’s Local Guides program are “largely invisible”, they are an “indispensable part of the Google Maps experience”, as they provide reviews, images, and answer queries about local places. These will be displayed under the “For You” tab in the Google Maps app. Users will see Local Guide’s recommendations upon following.
