The app’s “Auto Status” feature requires extensive amount of permissions from the device.

Instagram is launching a new messaging app called “Threads” on iOS and Android which is entirely focused on the “close friends” list. Threads users will be able to exchange messages only if they add each other as “close friends” on Instagram.

The app encourages users to share their status updates using emojis. If a user allows Instagram to access their personal data like location, movement, battery level and network connection, the app will automatically create an emoji status through its “Auto Status” feature.

Karina Newton, head of policy at Instagram says that the app will request personal data to determine what context to share. However, the user’s exact location will never be shared and the location data won’t be used for targeted advertising.
