5G may not be the “saviour” in smartphones, but will be a critical moment in mobile technology.

International Data Corporation’s (IDC) report forecasts a 1.6% rise in smartphone sales in 2020, driven by 5G phones being marketed. Sangeetika Srivastava, senior research analyst at IDC expects the last part of 2019 to see aggressive marketing to clear inventories and attract users towards the “next wave of smartphone technology”.

Further, despite an uptick in sales in second half of 2019, smartphone growth for the year would be “off 2.2%” from 2018. Around when smartphone sales began slumping “a few years ago”, consumers reported not finding new and additional features worth the price.

In 2019, only early adopters will be interested in 5G. However, in 2020, 5G smartphones are expected to comprise 8.9% of all smartphones sold, which is 123.5 million devices.
