The changes will only affect chats in Facebook Groups, not group chats.

Social media giant Facebook said it is withdrawing its group chat function, which allowed conversations between group members beyond posted comments. While the California based company did not give a reason for the move, it said it is exploring new ways to support “real-time communication” for groups.

The feature allowed participants of the group, who may not be connected as friends but through a group chat, to chat in a separate window.  This piece says that changes were likely made over spamming concerns and increased user sensitivity to privacy.

In its announcement, Facebook said that users will still be able to see old group chats as read-only from the 22nd August. The feature was launched in October of last year.
