Data from the official measurement body for the UK radio industry, Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR), states that commercial radio’s combined audience share in the UK has gone up to 48%. This is driven by 36.14 million people tuning in into it in Q2 2019.

At 49.3%, BBC holds a marginal lead. Q2 2019 also saw 48.8 million people aged 15 and over tune in each week. This means that for the quarter in question, the average number of weekly hours were 1.015 billion.

Of all adults, 27.5% of them reported listening to live radio via smartphone or tablet. 26% use voice-activated speakers such as a Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa. The study also revealed that 94% of people who own one of these smart speakers, make use of it to listen to live radio.
