Opponents of same-sex marriage say that they would refuse to attend a family member's same-sex wedding

Now that same-sex marriage has been legalized in seventeen states and Washington D.C., the prospect of attending a same-sex wedding is no longer merely theoretical for many Americans. There are hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples, many of whom are now married or set to marry. For opponents of same-sex marriage who have family members or close friends in same-sex relationships, the question of whether to attend a service that they morally disapprove of can be difficult.

The latest research from YouGov shows that most people who oppose same-sex marriage (65%) would not attend the same-sex wedding of a family member or close friend. 24% of opponents say that they would, while 94% of people who favor same-sex marriage would attend.

Overall, 62% of Americans say that they would attend a same-sex wedding. Most Democrats (75%) and Independents (60%) would attend, though Republicans are evenly split. 47% of Republicans would attend the same-sex wedding of a family member or close friend, but 46% say that they would not.

46% of Americans now support same-sex marriage, while 40% oppose it. Most Democrats support (65%) rather than oppose (26%) same-sex marriage, while Independents tend to support it, with 46% in favor and 37% against it. Most Republicans (62%) oppose same-sex marriages, though 21% do support it.
