The majority of Scottish adults think that Andy Murray will win Wimbledon this year - and half say he is the greatest British tennis player to have ever lived
As Scottish tennis player Andy Murray advances to his fifth consecutive Wimbledon semi-final, after fighting back from two sets down against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco to take the quarter-final on Wednesday, YouGov can reveal that the Scottish public predict a Grand-slam victory for Andy Murray at Wimbledon.
In a YouGov Scottish Omnibus poll, 55% of the Scottish public agree that “Andy Murray will win Wimbledon this year” while just 18% disagree. In Mid-Scotland and Fife, the region containing Murray’s home-town Dunblane, agreement is up at 72%.
Last year nearly 17 million people watched Andy Murray lose the Wimbledon final, 1.7 million of which were Scottish. This year, 73% of the Scottish public say they are “very” or “fairly” likely to watch a Murray final; that would equate to over 3.7 million Scottish viewers.
The last British player to win Wimbledon was Fred Perry, who was victorious for three successive years from 1934-36. But Murray’s countrymen rank him higher: fully half (50%) say Andy Murray is “the greatest tennis player that Great Britain has ever had” while only 18% disagree.
In response to fellow player Ernests Gulbis who said in May that interviews with Murray are “boring”, Murray agreed but insisted this is only "so I don’t have to deal with the aftermath of any scandals.” The majority of Scots (53%), however, disagree with the statement “Andy Murray has a boring personality”, and only a third (30%) agree.
