Sunderland's newly appointed manager, Paolo DiCanio, has released a statement denying that he has fascist or racist sympathies

Though he has previously refused to answer questions about rumours that he harboured radical sentiments (one Italian news agency quoted Mr DiCanio as saying, "I am a fascist, not a racist" after he gave fascist salute to a crowd there), Mr DiCanio has released a statement bluntly denying the allegations.

The statement reads: "I am not political, I do not affiliate myself to any organisation, I am not a racist and I do not support the ideology of fascism. I respect everyone...I am a football man and this and my family are my focus. Now I will speak only of football.
