Boris Johnson beats David Cameron as the politician who made the 'biggest impression' in 2012

London Mayor Boris Johnson made the biggest impression of any high-profile British politician in 2012, according to our poll for The Sun.

Asked to choose from a list of frontline political personalities, 25% of Brits chose the Tory mayor as the politician who made the biggest impression on them. Meanwhile, David Cameron was a distant runner-up with only 9% of people saying the Prime Minister made the biggest impression.

In third place was Labour leader Ed Miliband, at 7%, and just behind him was UKIP leader Nigel Farage, at 6%. However, the highest proportion of respondents (32%) said no one on the list made much of an impression on them in 2012.

Biggest news event of 2012

A majority (54%) of the British public said the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was the biggest news event of the year.

Meanwhile, 14% of people said the Jimmy Savile sex scandal was the biggest story of the year, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was third on the list, at 7%.

Year of sport

While London 2012 was chosen as the biggest news event of the year, it was a non-Olympic event that respondents said was the single greatest achievement in British sport in 2012.

Bradley Wiggins becoming the first Brit to win the Tour de France was selected by 23% of the British public as the biggest sporting achievement of the year. Just behind was Britain coming third in the Olympic medal table, chosen by 22% of the public. Jessica Ennis winning gold in the Heptathalon was in third place, at 13%.
