45% Britons say Olympics will 'do more' for Britain this year; 33% say Queen's Diamond Jubilee
Of two major national events taking place in the UK this year – the London Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee – a large portion of the British public think the Olympics will do more to promote the interests of Britain than the Jubilee.
- 45% believe that the London Olympics will better promote the interests of Britain
- While a smaller percentage (33%) believe the Diamond Jubilee will do more
- Regarding plans to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, 18% feel more should be done to celebrate while 15% think less should be done
- 46% say the current plans are about right
- Just less than 1 in 5 believe that more should be done to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years as monarch
The celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee include a flotilla of up to one thousand boats assembled from across the UK and abroad on the Thames, an extended weekend with additional bank holidays June 2nd - 5th, and the awarding of a current town with city status – of which there are 25 candidates from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the Diamond Jubilee should celebrate the Queen's 'experience, dignity and quiet authority'.
The Olympics, on the other hand, begin on 27th July this year, and will see millions descend on the many varied stadia and parks in London and elsewhere that are being prepared for the events. London Olympic Committee Chairman and Olympic medallist Seb Coe has called the London Games 'unforgettable', and last year dubbed it 'the greatest show on earth'.
