There's no consensus on what to do if either party tries to form a minority government
If the election leaves us in a mess, what should the losing major party do?
In a new YouGov poll for Red Box, we asked: "Imagine that after the election there is a hung parliament, the Conservatives are unable to form a government and that Labour end up forming a minority government, but without a majority and without a firm agreement of support from other parties. In these circumstances, what do you think the Conservatives should do?"
We then posed the same question again only swapping "Conservatives" and "Labour". The result was symmetrical, with a narrow six-point lead for giving the "winner" a fair go at running the government, rather than opposing it and going for a second general election.
Supporters of Labour and the Conservatives are 3 to 1 in favour of going for a second election if the other side is only marginally ahead. So no consensus, and everything pointing to further hostilities.
