Only one in four support the creation of new ones
As far as pre-election pledges go, yesterday's promise by David Cameron of 500 more free schools by 2020 is not exactly a slam dunk. Significantly more people will see it as a threat rather than a good thing.
A 24-hour poll for Red Box reveals that, when asked, voters tend to oppose free schools, by 42% to 25% (32% don't know).
When asked specifically what the future of the free schools programme should be, 50% of people say that no more should be created. Only 21% think that "the government should continue to support the opening of more free schools".
