YouGov today undertook a dial test of Nigel Farage’s address to the YouGov-Cambridge forum, looking at how the UKIP leader’s detractors and supporters changed their views of him as a result of watching the speech
The test – undertaken among a bespoke group of 617 Farage supporters and 507 Farage detractors drawn from the YouGov panel - measured viewers’ attitudes to what they were watching. The sample covered a range of ages and genders and regions and panellists were given prior warning that they would be participating. It provided a full rehearsal of YouGov’s dial testing capabilities ahead of next year’s European Election and the General Election in 2015.

Top-line findings of the dial test:
- Detractors do not trust the UKIP leader (giving him a mean score of 2.8 out of 10 on the issue following the speech)
- However, detractors are more positive when it comes to his powers of persuasion (giving him a mean score of 4.7 out of 10 for the speech)
- Supporters are highly favourable to the UKIP leader across all measures, including giving him a score of 99% when asked whether what he said in his speech was right
- This compares with 42% of detractors who think what he said in his speech was right (compared to 48% who thought he was wrong)
- 38% of detractors had a more favourable view of Nigel Farage after watching the speech
- Supporters viewed the speech well, giving it a mean score of 9.3 out of 10
- Detractors were less positive, giving it a mean score of 4.3 out of 10
- The top three words about the speech among Farage supporters were: “Interested” (80%), “Hopeful” (76%) and “Confident” (46%)
- The top three words about the speech among Farage detractors were: “Uneasy” (52%), “Interested” (39%) and “Bored” (25%)
