The country is split over “safe” drug rooms – with young people more likely to support the idea than the old
An Independent Drugs Commission for Brighton and Hove last week proposed that consumption rooms, where people could use illegal drugs under the supervision of professional healthcare workers, could reduce the number of drug related deaths in Brighton. Critics, however, have said the proposal could “encourage poor lifestyle choice”.
Half of Britons say creating “safe consumption rooms” in Brighton is a “bad idea”, while 39% say it is a “good idea”.
There is a strong pattern with age: more 18-24 year olds support the idea (50%) than oppose it (38%), while even numbers (41%) of 25-39 year olds support and oppose. 53% of 40-59 year olds and 58% of over 60s are in opposition.
Brighton’s proposal rekindled debate over whether efforts are better put to managing the drugs market rather than eradicating it, and attention turned to other places where the rooms have been tested, with experts saying there has never been an overdose in such a facility anywhere in the world.
