Recent online research from YouGov’s SME Omnibus survey reveals that nearly half of all SME senior decision makers surveyed (47%) agree that their business had not suffered as a result of the snow over the winter period.

  • Similarly, 55% believe the snowy conditions did not make much of an impact at all on the drop in sales for businesses.
  • Over a third (37%) of SMEs thought their business suffered slightly over the winter period. In the South, this increases to 44%.
  • Only 14% of SME decision makers surveyed thought their business significantly suffered during the snowy weather.

Sentiment of this nature was most evident in the Midlands were nearly a quarter (24%) agreed that the snow had significantly affected their business in a negative way. Londoners were least affected, with 63% saying their business had not been affected at all.

Recently, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) called for measures to be put in place to help small businesses through the winter freeze. They called for governments, banks and local authorities to give small firms financial breathing space in order to take account of the lost business over the Christmas period due to the harsh weather conditions. We asked respondents whether they agreed with the proposal, and 72% of SME senior decision makers backed the idea compared to only 19% who were not in favour of the plans.

YouGov’s SME Omnibus surveys 500 senior business decision makers in small to medium business enterprises on a monthly basis.
