Tax on the agenda

The first YouGov/Sun voting intention poll of 2011

shows voting intention figures of CON 40%, LAB 42%, LDEM 8%, suggesting there has not been much change in the levels of party support over the Christmas holidays (not that this should be a surprise, there are rarely many significant political developments over the break).

The latest fieldwork was carried out on Monday and Tuesday, with the media dominated by discussion of the rise in VAT. While there is no obvious effect upon voting intention (yet), this did have a significant impact on our tracker questions. Asked what people thought the most important issues were facing the country, 28% people said tax (up from 16% when we last asked the question in December).

Asked what the most important issues were facing them and their families, tax was chosen by 39% of respondents, second only to the economy on 66%.
