British opinion is split over Britain and France’s new treaty on defence co-operation.

Political agreement?

According to the shared defence treaty, signed by Cameron and French PM Sarkozy on Wednesday, a ‘combined joint expeditionary force’ of around 10,000 soldiers will operate under one military commander. At least one aircraft carrier (between the two countries) will be kept at sea at any time, and joint work will take place on drones, mine counter-measures, satellite communications, and nuclear technology and testing.

Concerns have been raised over what would happen if the countries disagreed on a course of military action, however Prime Minister David Cameron has stated that there would have to be ‘political agreement’ in place for the joint force to be deployed.
