New DreamWorks animation film Shrek Forever After, released on July 2nd, has received a flurry of positive comments, or ‘tygs’, on the TellYouGov leaderboard, having reached a volume score of 52 and sentiment score of 78, with the latter soaring up by 44 points in the past 24 hours. This success reflects the fourth Shrek film’s triumph in knocking Get him to the Greek off the number one box office spot this week, and grossing £8.9 million over last weekend.
The film sees our ogre hero (voiced by Mike Myers) growing tired of domesticated life and in a moment of disillusion, he is duped into signing away his life and kingdom as he knows it, in exchange for one day as a ‘normal’ hated ogre. The ensuing chaos sees him battle with ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ in an alternative fairytale world, where his wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz), as a strong ogre resistance leader, and his trusty sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy), working pulling carriages for the king, no longer know who he is.
Despite film critics giving this latest instalment bad press, Shrek Forever After has many fans, with one user, or ‘tygger’, believing it to be ‘the best Shrek film so far’. Others share this enthusiasm, with comments like: ‘laughed out loud’; ‘very funny film’ and ‘absolutely loved it’. Another claimed the ‘effects [were] fantastic’.
However, some do agree with the critics, and believe the final Shrek film is ‘not as funny’ as the previous three. One said that the films ‘should have stopped at [Shrek] 2’ while another commented that it was ‘the worst of the lot’. Another lamented the film as more evidence of the trend for ‘money grabbing sequels'.
Overall, though, with the final film’s global box office success, and one tygger calling it ‘fun for the whole family’ – it has grossed over $232,538,000 in the US alone – it looks like DreamWorks have bagged their very own happy ever after.
