Dawn of the dance...?

A dramatic peak in popularity on the TellYouGov leaderboard for the British box office smash StreetDance 3D mirrored the success of its initial release, but the film has failed to maintain momentum in the two weeks since.
StreetDance 3D, which hit cinemas late last month, follows a dance crew who find themselves unexpectedly stuck for rehearsal space ahead of the UK Street Dance Championships. Protagonist Carly (Nichola Burley) strikes a deal with the local Royal Dance School to use their space in return for teaching the initially ‘straight-laced’ ballet dancers their moves, leading to a whole new fusion of dance to take to finals.

As the world’s first 3D dance film, and with stars including Britain’s Got Talent 2009 winners Diversity and hip-hop band N-Dubz, the movie has seen an increasingly positive reception from TellYouGov users, or ‘tyggers’, despite lukewarm acclaim from critics. In the week following its release, StreetDance 3D had been riding a wave of rave reviews on TellYouGov, with both volume and sentiment scores doubling from 13 to 26 points.

‘Tyggers’ sealed their approval of the dance flick, lauding it as ‘a visually brilliant’ insight into youth culture, which, although ‘cheesy’, looks set to ‘give the Americans a run for their money’.

However, waning interest could indicate that the dance film genre may have reached saturation point. Blockbuster rival release ‘Robin Hood’ continues to creep ahead while no film has so far managed to steal the crown from Sex and the City 2, which still sits as the most popular film on TellYouGov on volume alone. Just before the weekend, it appears StreetDance 3D had reached its peak - since dropping a total of 18 points to volume and sentiment scores of eight points apiece, and still falling.

Despite its fading score though, the film’s positive comments vastly outnumber negative ones by far, with one tygger simply calling it ‘good entertainment’ and another just ‘fantastic’. Only one called it ‘terrible’, suggesting that it seems that for all its ‘cheese’ and ‘poor plotline’, StreetDance 3D remains a veritable visual treat for most of those who’ve lined up to see the slick dance moves and wisecracking kids – widescreen style.
