Public attitudes to a hung parliament

38% of the British public would be ‘dismayed’ if the current general election resulted in a hung parliament, according to a poll commissioned by the Sun newspaper. Only 11% of respondents would be ‘delighted’, if the results on May 6th end in a hung parliament.

However, maybe all is not lost for advocates of a hung parliament, as a considerable amount (36%) stated they would not mind if this were the outcome. It seems Conservative supporters are the most worried as a huge 70% state that they would be ‘dismayed’ by a hung parliament. In contrast, only 15% of Liberal Democrats responded that a hung parliament would leave them feeling ‘dismayed’.

Although only 1 in 10 of the public claim they would be ‘delighted’ if no party gained an overall majority, just over two thirds (36%) stated that they believe a hung parliament would be a good thing as it would force two parties to work together. The majority however, with 11 percentage points more at 47%, believe that a hung parliament would be a bad thing as it will lead to a weak government who will not be able to make tough decisions. Again, there is a considerable Conservative bias over this parliamentary outcome with 76% of Conservative supporters believing a hung parliament to be a bad thing. And once more there is a large inter-party disparity with almost two thirds (64%) of Lib Dem supporters believing that hung parliament would be a good thing.
