‘With no power comes no responsibility’. That's just one of the comical premises proposed by Hollywood’s latest blockbuster, Kick-Ass. The virtuoso comic book adaptation, which tells the story of a teenage superhero with no super powers, featuring Nicolas Cage alongside Aaron Johnson in the title role, has been lauded by critics for its humorous take on the superpower genre. Tell YouGov users, or ‘tyggers’, are no exception, and have been queuing up to extol it.
At the time of writing, the film’s volume score peaked at 69 and its sentiment score at 60 on average over the past seven days – the highest of any film currently on the board – which indicates a considerable feeling of positive sentiment among the general public. This good feeling ranged from tyggers describing the film as ‘the best film I’ve seen in a long time - the perfect combination of comedy and violence’ to ‘funny, clever and a great reason for a trip to the cinema’. And the superlatives didn’t stop here: ‘the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages’ proclaimed one respondent, and other proclaimed that ‘it exceeded all my expectations’.
The film has received criticism from the Daily Mail for glorifying and trivialising violence, but tyggers have dismissed this concern. One retorted that ‘it is not likely to be as corruptive as the Daily Mail thinks’ and another instructing all to ‘ignore the Daily Mail’.
Following recent successes of other high-profile Hollywood blockbusters such as Avatar and The Hurt Locker on the TellYouGov leaderboard, and notwithstanding the current post-TV debate Nick Clegg furore, Kick-Ass looks certain to remain a leaderboard fixture for some time to come.
