Most football fans think Paolo DiCanio's appointment as manager of Sunderland AFC is acceptable

Fifty-five percent of football fans have no objection to Sunderland's appointment of Paulo DiCanio as manager, despite the recent controversy over "fascist" comments he made previously. Over a quarter (28%) think it is unacceptable and 16% don’t know.

The findings come after former Foreign Secretary David Miliband resigned from Sunderland’s board over the appointment citing DiCanio’s previous statements about fascism. The new manager subsequently clarified his position saying, "I am not a racist. I do not support the ideology of fascism." His appointment has opened up a debate about whether political views should have an influence on sporting decisions.

Among the general population support for DiCanio’s appointment is more evenly split. Just over a third of people (34%) think it is acceptable while three in ten (30%) think it is unacceptable. A plurality (36%) did not know.
