Hotmail top choice for main personal email in Britain

Research into the usage of emails for business and personal use, commissioned by digital marketing agency Pure360, showed that Hotmail is the most popular personal email host, beating all other email providers.

MSN Hotmail is Britain’s most popular email host for personal emails, as nearly 3 in 10 Britons online (29%) have it as their main personal account. The research also shows that more women (31%) than men (27%) have Hotmail as their main personal account.

Yahoo is the second most popular email host for personal use with 15% of the public opting for it, while 14% of Brits have Gmail as their main personal email provider.

Age differences

Nearly half (47%) of the 18-24 year olds online have Hotmail as their main personal account, while the proportion of 35-44 year olds using Hotmail is considerably smaller (27%). 23% of the public in the same age group opt for Yahoo.

A large proportion (44%) of 25-34 year olds online use Hotmail as their main personal email provider, compared to a quarter (25%) of Brits aged 45-54. AOL is the most popular with people aged 45-54 online, as 5% have it as their main personal email provider.

Regional demographics

People living in the East Midlands are most likely to have a personalised email domain, as 10% use their own email domain for their main personal account. Hotmail is most popular in the North East, as 39% of the population online there use Hotmail as their main personal email account.

People in London opt for Gmail more often, with 18% of the population in the capital choosing it above all other email providers for their main personal account. AOL was found to be most popular in Scotland, as 5% of the Scottish public use it.

More than one email

On average, the British public online have nearly four email addresses in total, including personal and business use. 82% of the British population online have up to four email accounts for personal and business use. Over one in six (17%) British adults have five or more email addresses.
